I usually don’t write about shounen-type anime. Since you know, the plot always like that. But Solo Leveling is kind of new game on the screen. Its original novel and manhwa were Korean, but the anime is Japanese.
Solo Leveling is based on a popular Korean web novel and manhwa of the same name. It follows the story of Sung Jin-Woo, a weak hunter who gets a chance to become the strongest after a mysterious incident. He gains a system that allows him to level up and acquire new skills and items, just like in a video game. He also faces various dangers and enemies along the way, as he tries to uncover the secrets behind the gates that connect the human world with the monster world.
I read the novel only once, finished it, and that’s all. It is a good shounen-type work, and I can enjoy it, but it didn’t make me exited that much so I gone crazy over it.
The manhwa, however, it gave another different vibe. The work of Chugong, its author, on the hand of the late Dubu from Redice Studio became a masterpiece of modern webtoon. For me, it raised the entire standard for adventure and action type webtoon all over.
When the anime news came last year, I wonder how the adaptation shall turn out. So, waiting, I am.
Shall it give a surprise?
When the anime released, my mind didn’t blow up, fortunately. The studios make it like another main character with eight grader syndromes, just like many other characters from the Japanese anime franchise. I mean, I had a picture how to personify the main character on the novel, and it got stronger by the manhwa, but it turned completely different on the anime.
Well, I didn’t take it to heart. Since the studio which created the anime is A-1. Their works were always like that. Perhaps I may take my hope high if Madhouse was the one who make the adaption.
The Solo Leveling anime created a massive hype on its premier. I can understand the fans were anticipating to this work of art. I mean, it still a good anime, nevertheless.
For me, it good to spend some time to entertain myself by watching it, but it not on the must watch list. And honestly, it gives a fresh air on the shonen-isekai-themed animes those currently choked the market.
