Sometimes. But often, no.
Because the hardest goals aren’t always about dreams. Dreams are luminous things—becoming a writer, climbing a mountain, building something beautiful. Dreams pull you forward with their light.
The hardest goals are different. They’re about survival of the self. To forgive someone who shattered you. To stay sober one more day. To leave a love that’s killing you softly. To speak after years of silence. To be honest when lying would be so much easier. To keep going when every cell in your body is screaming to stop.
These goals don’t lead to dreams coming true. They lead to being able to dream again.
A soul might tell you: the hardest goal I ever set was to stop hating myself. Or to let someone love me. Or to accept that I would never be who I thought I should be, and to live anyway, as this smaller, stranger, more honest version of myself.
The path toward a dream assumes you know where you’re going. But the hardest goals are often just finding solid ground. Learning to walk without apologizing for taking up space. Choosing to stay alive in a life that doesn’t look like the one you imagined.
Sometimes the hardest goal a soul sets is simply this: to remain a soul at all, when everything conspires to make you something less.
