Karere: Finally, a Proper WhatsApp Client for Linux

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

As an openSUSE Tumbleweed user, I’ve long been frustrated by WhatsApp’s absence from the Linux ecosystem. Karere has completely solved this problem for me, and it’s become an essential part of my daily workflow.

What Makes Karere Stand Out:

Karere isn’t just another web wrapper hastily thrown together—it’s a thoughtfully crafted GTK4 application built with Vala and Libadwaita that truly feels native to Linux. The interface is clean, responsive, and follows GNOME design principles beautifully. It integrates seamlessly with my desktop environment, supporting both light and dark themes with automatic switching.

Features I Love:

  • Native notifications that work perfectly with my system
  • Keyboard shortcuts that make navigation quick and efficient
  • Background running so I never miss messages
  • Hardware-accelerated rendering keeps everything smooth
  • Persistent login means I’m not constantly re-authenticating

Installation & Performance:

Installing via Flatpak on Tumbleweed was straightforward, and the app runs flawlessly. It feels light and responsive—none of the sluggishness you might expect from a web-based solution. The fact that it’s open source (GPL v3.0) gives me confidence about privacy and security, which is important when dealing with messaging apps.

Bottom Line:

For Linux users who need WhatsApp functionality, Karere is hands-down the best solution available. Developer Thiago Fernandes has created something truly special here—a professional-grade application that proves Linux desktop apps can be just as polished as their proprietary counterparts. If you’re on Linux and use WhatsApp, stop settling for browser tabs and give Karere a try.

Highly recommended for openSUSE, Fedora, and any GNOME-based distribution.
