When I was a little child, my mother though me so much of National Songs including what we call as “Keroncong Perjuangan”. One of them which brings much of childhood memories while I am staying in Yogyakarta was “Sepasang Mata Bola” (both versions) which somehow felt romantic in its own way.
But when speaking of “Sepasang Mata Bola”, I came to remember a Greek Song which has a similar atmosphere if we stand it their own cultural backgrounds. Maybe I know nothing about Greek, nor I can understand the language itself, but singing is not always about understanding something in direct means, isn’t it?
The song that I was talking about is “To Treno Fevgi Stis Okto” or literally known as “The Train Leaves at Eight” by Agnes Baltsa. The first time I met this song from an old cassette which was produced about seven years ago. I was amazed at the first time I heard the melody, but I couldn’t catch any of its words or lyrics. Obviously because it sung on Greek, which I knew later about it.
I prefer to listen to tape or cassette since they produced a high-quality sound for music instead of today’s digital player and media. I always joyful listening to this song in any moment, but I can’t provide you the lyrics since—yes the same reason—I can’t write nor speak Greek.
